The Detective and His Daemon by LJ-Todd The Detective and His Daemon by LJ-Todd
Blurb about Sherlock Holmes and his steppe polecat daemon, Kazimierz:

"Did you truly think John was Moriarty?"

Sherlock went completely still, the bow posed over the strings of the violin, and he looked at his daemon, whom was currently perched on the mantle, next to the skull. "Kaz..."

"Don't try and avoid the question," Kazimierz said firmly, standing up on his hind legs to glare at Sherlock. "Did you truly think John was Moriarty?"

"You know I did."

Kazimierz made a soft clicking sound. "And if he had been?" The polecat fixed Sherlock with a stony glare. "What would we have done, Sherlock?"

Sherlock swallowed visibly and looked towards the stairs leading to John's room, where he knew John and Adine were only sleeping because Sherlock had drugged John's tea after they'd returned from that damnable swimming pool. When he finally looked at his daemon again, Sherlock's eyes were cold but firm.

"You know what we would have done, Kazimierz."

Kazimierz gave a slight nod before he climbed down from the mantle and disappeared from the room. Sherlock felt the slightest strain on their bond as his daemon slipped into John's room but ignored it as he returned to playing the violin. As the music filled the sitting room he thought about his daemon's question, all while knowing the answer he hadn't been able to voice aloud.

If John had turned out to be Moriarty then Sherlock would have done anything and everything to protect him. John and Adine meant too much to him and Kazimierz to do anything else.

Kazimierz is a Polish name meaning "commands peace"

I got all excited because I thought you had given Sherlock a ferret as his Daemon, but Polecat is close enough. I love the little story you put in the description.
Love it!

Wow! I love the idea of each of them having daemon. And it looks REALLY awesome. Is it similar to Pullman Golden Compass, or a different origin?

:) I'm drawing on the idea of daemons from Pullman's His Dark Materials series, though it's not set in the same universe or anything.

That was what I'd figured (like Lyra and Pan) but I wanted to be sure. It's a really chill idea!

Firstly, I love that Sherlock's daemon is male. It just seems to be a quirk that suits him. Secondly I love that you went with a polecat instead of a ferrett, despite the similarities between the two. All in all, I love this! :D

Thanks :D Sherlock's daemon took a bit of thought, since at first I was leaning towards something rare and exotic. I'll admit I did consider the ferrett but ended up going with the steppe polecat because I love the coloring and the fact that it would look just different enough to add to Sherlock's uniqueness.

I like the detail about Sherlock's Daemon being male. I read the wiki, which said that it's rare having a same gender daemon, but could mean you have a gift like Second sight, Which would fit Sherlock perfectly! ... That or it means he's gay, which you could argue fits Sherlock. but I just really liked that detail to keep that special snowflake quality he has!

:) I knew right from the get go that something about Sherlock's daemon had to be different and at first I thought to use some rare, exotic animal but then I figured that it would work just as well if Kaz was male. It would symbolize Sherlock's uniqueness without being overly flashy.
