Ummi settled the day her mother died.

One minute her daemon was flying along as a butterfly and the next, when a man reached for her, Ummi's form shifted, becoming the massive harpy eagle that tore the man's eyes out. After that, between Ummi and Bane, she was kept safe. At least until she grew older, until the men decided to try again and the only option left was to climb. To escape and return with her father to exact vengeance.

As the years passed they both grew stronger, they protected each other and, the day word came of her father's death was the first time since Bane's excommunication that she cried. The entire time Ummi sat with her, comforting her.

"We'll make him pay, Tally," Ummi whispered, rubbing her feathered head against Talia's neck. "Just like when we escaped the Pit. Even if it takes years. Remember, it's the slow knife that cuts the deepest."
