Mitchell knew it surprised George and Annie that vampires still had their daemons. Vampires were, technically, dead. And he remembered Sahar bursting into golden dust when he'd died on that cursed battlefield. But when he'd woken she'd been right there. He'd once heard an older vampire suggest it was because though they physically died their soul continued to live.

Whatever the reason there were many nights when Mitchell was just happy to have Sahar with him.

After accidently killing yet another girl, after disposing of her body, Mitchell had curled up in his room, Sahar draped over him, rumbling deeply to try and comfort him.

"It's going to be alright, John," she whispered and he half wanted to smile. She was the only one to ever call him by his first name. "It's...It may never get completely better but I swear no matter what I will love you."

Mitchell sank his fingers into Sahar's fur, pulling her closer to him and squeezed his eyes shut. He knew she was speaking truthfully. No matter what happened, no matter who came or went in his life, Sahar would always be his constant. She would always be at his side.

Two years later she was standing, proud and strong, at his side as he asked George to end it. The last thing he saw, other than George's tear streaked face, was Sahar bursting, one last time, into a swirl of golden dust.
