Gannicus laughed as he watched Sibyl and Laeta braid one another's hair, the two women having formed a close bond. Guennola leapt up onto his lap and watched the woman they loved.

"In a few days time we will say goodbye to her for the last time," Guennola said as she looked up at him. "You know that."

Gannicus nodded. "But she will be safe and far from here."

"Gannicus..."

"I told Crixus I was no martyr upon cross," he said, still watching Sibyl. "But I would gladly give my life so that she might live."

Guennola nodded as she turned her amber gaze to Sibyl and Bengt. "We'll give them time to get as far as they can. We can give them a chance at a good life far from the grasp of Rome."</i>

Gannicus smiled when Sibyl looked at him. Her expression, warm and loving, seemed to light up the world. He was right. He was no martyr on upon cross but for her, for that wonderful, perfect woman, he would do anything, everything, to keep her safe.
